چکیده

Optical polarization properties of aluminum, gold and aluminum/gold subwavelength metallic gratings (SWMGs) are investigated numerically in the visible light band. Their performance as polarizing beam splitters are simulated with RCWA for varied metallic materials, grating depth and incident angle. Metallic waveguide theory is applied to explain the performance difference between Au and Al grating. A new type of Al/Au bimetallic is also investigated numerically for potential applications. Fabrication and properties of visible-light subwavelength amorphous silicon transmission gratings*

We present the first fabrication and investigation of visible-light subwavelength transmission gratings in high refractive index materials ~e.g., amorphous silicon! on silica substrates. The gratings have periods ranging from 100 to 800 nm in 50 nm increments, a thickness of 180 nm ~very thin!, and they were fabricated using electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. Because of the hig...

Subwavelength-structured polarization-selective surfaces

Subwavelength-period gratings exhibit a number of interesting polarization-selective properties. We investigate several such phenomena: an "inverse" wire-grid polarizer, which transmits TE light while stopping TM light, a guided-mode resonance filter with an order-of-magnitude difference in the width of the reflectance peak for the two orthogonal states of polarization, a metal-coated silicon g...

Study of broadband polarization conversion with metallic surface-relief gratings by rigorous coupled-wave analysis.

The conical rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) is employed to calculate the polarization conversion through the excitation of surface plasmons on metallic gratings. Various examples are examined with this numerical scheme. Our calculated results are consistent with those obtained from experiment and from other numerical methods. Three types of subwavelength surface-relief gratings are studie...

Polarization effects in metallic films perforated with a bidimensional array of subwavelength rectangular holes

For several years, periodical arrays of subwavelength cylindrical holes in thin metallic layers have taken a crucial importance in the context of the results reported by Ebbesen et al, on particularly attractive optical transmission experiments. It had been underlined that the zeroth order transmission pattern does not depend on the polarization of the incident light at normal incidence. In the...

Impact of Metallic Interface Description on Sub-wavelength Cavity Mode Computations

We present a theoretical study of electromagnetic reflection and cavity modes of 1D-subwavelength rectangular metallic gratings exposed to TE-polarised light. Computations are made using the modal development proposed by Sheng [1] and are a generalisation of those used by Barbara et al. [2]. In particular we study the influence of the choice of boundary conditions on the metallic surfaces on th...
